One of the teaching Jesus taught us was "Don't hide your light under a bushel, if you do people will not see the light....I am the Light of the world....He that comes to me will know that I am the true Light...in Him was light and there is no shadow in Him....This little Light of mine, I'm going to let it shine, let it shine, let it shine all the time".
Of all the images of God as revealed in His Son is one of light; light is what defeats darkness....even a small candle many miles away can be seen at night....and our world is full of darkness and is desperate for just a little tiny candle light which can be seen many miles away, but still is able to penetrate through that darkness and chase that darkness away. That is the power of just a little bit of light.
Our calling is not to hide our light under a bushel, if we do the oxygen will soon be gone and our light will go out. This is an analogy of how one little light has that same power to cast our light into the lives that really need understanding of the True Light, the light that the Father sent to us to demonstrate the power of just a little light.
Science tells us that the power of light combined with its speed which is 186,000 miles per second can not ever be broken. That light creates space as it continues to travel at speeds across our almost limitless universe and then presses on into space and there creates more space.
It is the same with spiritual light...once light is shined it can not be stopped...no darkness has the power to stop light. True is Light and in a world of false concepts, that True Light will always overcome any darkness around it...at an amazing speed.
Years ago I can remember that on our old farm we lit kerosene lanterns and used them which dimly lit our old farm house. But it was enough, with books held close words could still be read....as I made my way upstairs to do to bed in a darkened room, that kerosene lamp pushed ahead of me so I could see my bed, and after I blew out that kerosene lamp, I would be able to feel my way through the darkness and fold back my thick blankets and crawl into bed for a good night's sleep.
Before my time, my grand parents and their parents used simple candles...and they would shield the little burning wick as they made their way around their houses and finally blow their candle out as they also retired for the night.
Along came Thomas Edison who discovered electricity and soon there will little electric light with fragile light bulbs which generated a different type of light...and after that came more improved electric light bulbs which would pour even more light ahead of us and all around us...light was shining everywhere at night. Darkness seems to vanish when someone turned on a light switch and light shone from corner to corner. Yes light, light has been and will always be one of the most needed forces in life.
True also of spiritual light...it is a different type of light...it shines out of our souls because we have found the True Light of the world...the One who in the beginning said, "LET THERE BE LIGHT!: and it was so...just God's spoken Word sent light out throughout the whole universe...and later the Creator saw the darkness in the souls of men, and do He designed a human being to bring a message of light and truth and grace. Just light and truth are not enough for us, we also need grace. I may be able to prove to someone what is the truth, but unless I mix that truth with grace, I can harm those I try to convince.
Light from our sun is caused by fusion of hydrogen and if we were to just take the hydrogen from the water that is run from our facet in our kitchen sinks, if we could turn that into electrical power, we would have enough electrical power to meet all the power our nation would need every day. Think about the fact that we have in the past created hydrogen bombs and if they had been dropped some where, there would be no life left on the Earth. The science it there to create this power for good, but will we have the moral will power to use it for good?
Light and darkness; life and death...brightness and shadows...fact verses fiction. Methods have been developed to take salt out of ocean water and produce pure water, This is an expensive process but as more and more water is needed, money will have to be spent to produce clean water out of an almost endless supply of ocean salt water. It will be do or die...fields of grain and all sorts of fruit are dependent on having enough water. Bright sunshine in some places on the Earth creates droughts and the soil losses all its moisture. So there is power in light which can harm; if a person lays out in the bright sunshine too long, then the skin is burned and it will peel and blister and do permanent damage to the skin.
Those who are blind from birth have never seen light; they live in a whole of darkness and learn how to cope in their darkness. Jesus healed those who were blind from birth, but He also healed souls that were in darkness by showing them the love and grace of God His Father. Just as our Earth needs pure water to survive, our souls need God's light and grace to shine into our souls. So "this little light on mine, I'm going let it shine, let it shine, let it shine..."
